Kashmiri Temples & Places

The Kashmir Valley has historically been a hub of Kashmir Shaivism, learning, and pilgrimage, dotted with ancient stone monuments and sacred springs:

Mataa Kheer Bhawani (Tulmulla, Ganderbal): Dedicated to Goddess Ragnya Devi, this shrine is famous for a sacred spring whose water color is believed to subtly shift, signaling spiritual omens.

Shankaracharya Temple (Srinagar): Perched atop Gopadri Hill overlooking Dal Lake, this ancient Shaivite temple is associated with Adi Shankaracharya’s visit to the valley.

Sharika Devi Temple (Hari Parbat, Srinagar): Situated on Hari Parbat hill, this temple houses the worship of Goddess Jagadamba Sharika Bhagwati (represented by a sacred Sri Chakra), the presiding deity (Ishta Devi) of Srinagar.

Martand Sun Temple (Anantnag): Built in the 8th century by King Lalitaditya Muktapida, these grand stone ruins showcase the pinnacle of classical Kashmiri Hindu temple architecture.

Avantiswami & Avantishwara Temples (Awantipora): 9th-century temple complex built by King Avantivarman, dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

Amarnath Cave: Located high in the Himalayas, a revered pilgrimage destination home to the naturally formed ice Shivling.
